Zip A Dee Doo Dah

After seven days of sunshine on the "LC Cruise" it was hard to even think about putting my winter wardrobe back on and the beautiful Akron weather was not making it easier. The heat was hot and unpredictable, so in fact that the University had not planned on turning the air conditioning on till mid April. All things considered I made the executive decision to mail my winter coat back home.

A little bit about the University of Akron. Opened in 1872 as Buchtel College, named after a life long resident and business man of Akron. It was a single building campus, Old Buchtel Hall still has a presence on campus even after burning to the ground first in 1899 and then again in 1971. Members of Lambda chapter died in the first fire as they had a formal event at the Hall that evening.

Lambda chapter is the oldest chapter I visited, founded at Buchtel College in 1877. It is the oldest continually active chapter at the University of Akron today. Akron is also home to Delta Gamma's oldest existing chapter and the only chapter of Lone Star Fraternity which is the oldest local Fraternity in the U.S.

During my visit I got to fumble through some very cool archives that Lambda chapter had on display. One of my favorites is pictured above, a letter written to the Lambda Chapter from President Hoover during his term. He wrote to the chapter and Alumnae Association thanking them for welcoming him during his visit to Akron in 1931. I also loved seeing all the throwback copies of The Key Magazine. Kappa was the first organization to publish a magazine, below is a copy from the 90's featuring the Kappa Pickers! Kappa Pickers are musical groups established within our chapters, in the 1960's & 70's many of our groups joined USO tours to perform for our troops overseas. Today a handful of our chapters still have an active group of Pickers!

Lambda chapter also shared with me a beautiful candle passing ceremony. It's a surprise for the entire chapter so it was exciting to see and hear the anticipation.
Once around for friendship.
Twice around for pinning or lavalier.
Three times around for engagement.
It went around three times!

I was thrilled when I saw Akron on my schedule. I did not know much about the school before I arrived, only that Kirsten, a member from Eta Eta transferred there when I was a freshman. Of course, I let Facebook reunite Kirsten and I! I was thankful she lived nearby, even more excited to catch up and exchange tales of our dear Eta Eta days.

The Akron Zips open their Fall football season against
my beloved UCF Knights in Akron.
123 days and yes I am counting.
